FG Launches Northern CNG, Electric Vehicle Corridor in Kano

Government Pushes Cleaner Transport System

The Federal Government has launched the Northern Corridor of the Compressed Natural Gas and electric vehicle transport programme in Kano State.

The programme operates under the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles.

Officials unveiled the initiative on Thursday at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.

Government officials, investors, transport operators, and representatives of the Kano State Government attended the event.

FG Targets Lower Transport Costs

Representing Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia described the programme as a major economic strategy.

He explained that the initiative would support Nigeria’s energy transition and improve transportation efficiency.

According to him, rising transport costs continue to increase food prices and logistics expenses across the country.

“This transition is not just an energy policy; it is an economic strategy aimed at reducing costs and strengthening long-term growth,” he said.

Kano Emerges as Strategic Transport Hub

The Executive Chairman of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Ismaeel Ahmed, said the programme now focuses on building a sustainable transport ecosystem.

He disclosed that the initiative has expanded through vehicle conversion centres, refuelling stations, and workforce development projects.

Ahmed revealed that authorities have onboarded more than 300 conversion partners nationwide, including 41 centres in Kano.

He added that the programme has already trained over 7,000 Nigerians.

“We are guided by three priorities: affordability, availability and acceptability,” Ahmed said.

He also noted that the initiative has attracted more than $2 billion in investment commitments.

Kano Government Backs Initiative

Governor Abba Yusuf described the project as a timely intervention for residents and businesses.

According to him, cheaper transportation alternatives would improve living conditions and reduce economic pressure on citizens.

“Kano has always occupied a strategic position in commerce, transportation and industry,” he said.

The governor added that the state government has started working with investors and relevant agencies to expand gas and electric mobility infrastructure across Kano.
