Latvian PM resigns after Ukrainian drones trigger crisis

Latvia’s government collapsed after controversy over Ukrainian drones entering the country’s airspace.

Evika Silina has resigned as Latvia’s prime minister following a political crisis triggered by stray Ukrainian drones that crossed into Latvian territory.

The resignation came after Silina dismissed Defence Minister Andris Spruds over his handling of the incident. In response, Spruds’ Progressives party withdrew support from the ruling coalition, causing the government to collapse months before Latvia’s planned general election in October.

The crisis began on 7 May when three drones believed to be Ukrainian UAVs entered Latvian airspace. Officials said the drones were likely headed toward Russia before signal interference caused them to veer off course. One drone crashed near the eastern town of Rezekne, while another struck an empty oil storage facility.

Although no casualties were reported, residents criticised authorities for a delayed emergency response and slow activation of public alert systems. Silina later admitted “something went wrong” and called for greater accountability in Latvia’s defence sector.

Latvia, a strong supporter of Ukraine since Russia’s invasion began in 2022, has significantly increased defence spending and military preparedness due to growing security concerns in the Baltic region.

President Edgars Rinkevics is expected to begin talks on forming a new government immediately.
