Mexico beat South Korea to become first team in knockout stage

Co-hosts Mexico booked their place in the World Cup round of 32 with a hard-fought win over South Korea.

Mexico became the first team to qualify for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 1-0 victory over South Korea in Guadalajara.

The decisive moment in the clash came in the 50th minute. Midfielder Luis Romo tapped into an empty net after South Korea goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu spilled the ball following a collision with teammate Lee Gi-hyuk.

South Korea pushed for an equaliser late in the game. Cho Gue-sung’s close-range header was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Raul Rangel, who also denied Yang Hyun-jun from the rebound.

Mexico nearly extended their lead through Raul Jimenez and substitute Obed Vargas, but Kim produced two important saves to keep the scoreline close.

The victory gives Mexico a perfect record after two matches and confirms Javier Aguirre’s side as Group A winners. The result also means the co-hosts will remain in Mexico City for their round-of-32 and potential round-of-16 matches.

The result sends Mexico into the knockout stage, while South Korea still have qualification hopes in their own hands ahead of their final group match against South Africa.
