Mississippi tornadoes injure 17 as severe storms cause damage

Multiple tornadoes ripped through Mississippi overnight, leaving injuries, flooding and widespread damage.

At least three tornadoes struck parts of Mississippi overnight, injuring at least 17 people and causing major destruction across several communities, state officials confirmed.

Some of the worst-hit areas include Purvis, Brookhaven and a mobile home park in Bogue Chitto. Emergency crews responded to reports of damaged homes, fallen trees and debris scattered across roads. Residents also reported baseball-sized hail in parts of Mississippi and neighboring Alabama.

Severe flooding was recorded in parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama as heavy rain moved across the South. In Montgomery, the Alabama State Capitol building was temporarily evacuated during a special legislative session because of dangerous weather conditions.

The National Weather Service said survey teams will inspect damage paths in Franklin, Lincoln and Lawrence counties to confirm the strength and number of tornadoes. Additional surveys are also planned near Purvis and south of Hattiesburg.

Mississippi had already recorded 62 tornadoes this year before Wednesday, although most were classified as weaker EF0 or EF1 storms. Forecasters warned that more severe weather could develop as a cold front moves through the region.

Authorities are urging residents across the South to remain alert as more heavy rain and storms are expected in the coming days.
