Morocco secured a dramatic place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup last 16 after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
The Atlas Lions dominated large parts of the match but were repeatedly denied by Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and the woodwork. Their frustrations grew when Cody Gakpo, who had recently revealed the heartbreaking loss of his unborn son, finished off a rapid counter-attack in the 72nd minute to give the Netherlands the lead.
Morocco refused to give up. Deep into stoppage time, Issa Diop powered home a header from Chemsdine Talbi’s cross to force extra time and keep his side’s World Cup dream alive.
Neither team found a winner in the additional 30 minutes despite more chances, including a remarkable save from Verbruggen to deny Soufiane Rahimi.
The tie was eventually decided by penalties. Morocco held their nerve as Dutch players Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Crysencio Summerville all failed from the spot. Ismail Saibari calmly converted the decisive penalty to spark wild celebrations.
Morocco will now face Canada in the World Cup last 16 after producing one of the tournament’s biggest knockout victories.
The Atlas Lions continue their impressive World Cup campaign with confidence growing ahead of the next round.
