‘Offer value, don’t defend politicians for money’ — youth minister tells young people

Ayodele Olawande

Ayodele Olawande, minister for youth development, has urged Nigerian youths to stop depending on politicians for financial rewards and instead focus on contributing ideas, skills and value to national development.

The minister spoke on Saturday in Abuja during the Forum of National Youth Leaders of All Political Parties in Nigeria themed, “The Place of Nigerian Youths in the Political Discussions of 2027 and Beyond”.

Olawande said many young people participate in politics mainly for immediate financial benefits rather than meaningful engagement and policy contribution.

“A lot of people don’t look at the vision; they look at immediate gratification,” he said.

“That’s why people come to campaigns just for money. After the campaign, that’s the end. They don’t contribute ideas.”

The minister advised youths to approach political leaders with practical ideas and solutions instead of demands for money.

“So, let’s have something we want to discuss,” he said.

“If you go to a politician and don’t discuss ideas, if you put money first, the politician may give you money, but will ignore you next time.”

Olawande also urged young Nigerians to focus on nation-building, leadership and self-development rather than fighting political battles on behalf of politicians.

“Our leaders don’t fight themselves; only the youth fight themselves to please the leaders,” he said.

“So, it’s time for the youth to work for the betterment of the country.”

The minister further encouraged youths to acquire relevant skills and support one another, adding that youth inclusion in governance should be seen as a necessity rather than a privilege.
