Senate Approves ₦2.285tn FCT Budget for 2026

Lawmakers Back Spending Plan for Abuja Development

The Senate of Nigeria has approved the 2026 Statutory Appropriation Bill for the Federal Capital Territory, with a total budget of ₦2.285 trillion.

Lawmakers passed the bill after reviewing a harmonised report from both chambers of the National Assembly.

Budget Breakdown Highlights Capital Projects

Austin Akobundu presented the report on behalf of committee chairman Ibrahim Bomai.

He said the budget draws from a projected revenue of ₦2.385 trillion. The plan allocates ₦165.7 billion for personnel costs and ₦378.2 billion for overhead expenses.

Capital projects received ₦1.741 trillion, representing over 76 percent of the total budget.

Focus on Infrastructure and Services

Akobundu said the structure shows a clear focus on infrastructure and public service delivery. He added that lawmakers worked closely with officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration during the process.

He noted that the committees held extensive discussions before finalising the proposal.

Growing Demand Drives Budget Priorities

The approval comes as residents call for better roads, healthcare, transport, and security in Abuja and nearby communities.

Rapid population growth has increased pressure on public services across the capital.

Senators Praise Fiscal Plan

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau described the budget as strong and development-driven.

He said the high allocation to capital projects shows commitment to improving infrastructure in the FCT.

Abdul Ningi also praised the proposal. He said it addresses concerns raised during previous oversight activities.

Bill Moves for Presidential Assent

The Senate passed the bill through third reading. Lawmakers will now forward it for presidential approval.
