Rescue Teams Respond After Shark Attack
A man in his thirties suffered critical injuries on Saturday after a shark attack near Rottnest Island in Western Australia.
The incident happened shortly after 10:00 a.m. local time near the coastal area close to Perth.
A spokesperson for St John Ambulance Western Australia confirmed that emergency teams quickly responded to the attack.
“The rescue helicopter is on scene, along with police and island emergency services,” the spokesperson said.
Authorities Launch Emergency Operation
Rescue officials deployed helicopters, police officers and local emergency workers to the area after receiving distress reports.
Authorities have not released details about the shark species involved or the extent of the victim’s injuries.
The victim received emergency medical attention at the scene before rescue teams arranged further treatment.
Australia Records Hundreds of Shark Incidents
Australia has recorded nearly 1,300 shark incidents since 1791, according to official data tracking encounters between sharks and humans.
More than 260 of those attacks resulted in fatalities.
The latest incident follows several recent shark attacks across Australia.
In January, a shark killed a 12-year-old boy in Sydney Harbour. Officials also recorded four separate attacks within two days during that period, forcing the closure of several beaches.
Scientists Link Attacks to Ocean Changes
Australian scientists believe rising ocean temperatures and increased human activity in coastal waters may influence shark migration patterns.
Experts say these environmental changes could contribute to the growing number of shark encounters in some regions.
