IGP Declares End to Impunity in Police Force

IGP Pushes for Police Reforms

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has declared an end to impunity within the Nigeria Police Force.

He said the force is introducing a new system focused on transparency, accountability and effective policing.

Disu made the statement on Friday during an official visit to the Edo State Police Command in Benin City.

During the visit, he held an interactive session with police officers and personnel.

Disu Calls for Collective Effort

The IGP urged officers to support ongoing reforms aimed at sanitising the police force.

According to him, meaningful reforms require collective commitment from all personnel.

“I know I cannot do it alone. That is why I have come here to talk to them, so that all of us will be on the same page,” he said.

Disu also revealed plans to improve the traffic warden unit after listening to concerns raised by officers.

Traffic Warden Unit Set for Upgrade

The police chief noted that the force had not recruited traffic wardens for several years.

He described the situation as a major issue that requires urgent attention.

“The traffic warden unit should be upgraded. So, when I get back home, we are going to talk about it,” he stated.

Disu explained that the interaction with officers exposed him to operational challenges that previously escaped his attention.

IGP Condemns Police Brutality

Speaking on police misconduct, the IGP referenced a recent incident involving an officer accused of killing an unarmed civilian.

He described the act as a clear example of impunity.

“You arrested somebody who was not struggling with you, you brought him out in daylight and you shot him,” Disu said.

He added that authorities immediately tried and dismissed the officers involved before preparing to charge them in court.

According to him, such actions reflect the force’s determination to end misconduct and enforce accountability.

Edo Police Seek More Support

The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, appealed for additional logistics and tactical support for the command.

He said the command has intensified patrols, intelligence operations and raids on criminal hideouts across the state.

Agbonika stressed that stronger operational support would improve security efforts in Edo State.
