Disney+ Approves New Sports Documentary Series
Disney+ has greenlit a new docuseries featuring Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. However, this time, the pair will not appear as their famous Marvel characters.
Instead, the series will focus on their sailing team and its journey through one of the world’s fastest-growing water sports competitions.
Series Follows Australia’s Flying Roos Team
The upcoming documentary will spotlight SailGP’s BONDS Flying Roos team from Australia. Reynolds and Jackman co-own the team and will serve as key figures throughout the project.
According to the official synopsis, the series will follow the team during a high-pressure global racing season. In addition, viewers will get an inside look at the challenges of competing in a championship known for speed, strategy and intense competition.
The races feature identical 50-foot catamarans that can reach speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour. Furthermore, the events take place close to shore, giving fans a stadium-like viewing experience.
Reynolds and Jackman Promise Action and Entertainment
In a joint statement, Reynolds and Jackman expressed excitement about the project.
“This is our first collaboration since Deadpool & Wolverine. Once again, we expect action, comedy and heart. However, this time there will be a lot more water,” they said.
The pair also joked about hoping to encounter pirates during the sailing adventure.
Olympic Champion Joins the Cast
The docuseries will also feature Tom Slingsby, one of the most successful sailors in modern history.
Slingsby won Olympic gold and the America’s Cup. In addition, he has secured three SailGP championships during his career.
His experience and leadership are expected to play a major role throughout the series.
Disney Highlights Growing Interest in SailGP
Eric Schrier, President of Direct-to-Consumer International Originals, Strategic Programming and Emerging Media, said the project offers a unique perspective on elite competition.
According to him, the series will give audiences an exclusive look at the demands of professional sailing and the commitment required to succeed at the highest level.
Another Sports Success for Reynolds
The new project marks Reynolds’ second major sports documentary venture.
Previously, he gained widespread success with Welcome to Wrexham, the popular series about Welsh football club Wrexham AFC, which he co-owns with actor Rob McElhenney.
Meanwhile, the show recently launched its fifth season, further strengthening Reynolds’ growing presence in sports entertainment.
