South Korea Beat Czech Republic in 2026 FIFA World Cup Opener

South Korea came from behind to secure a dramatic victory over the Czech Republic in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

South Korea fought back to defeat Czech Republic 2-1, with substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu scoring the decisive goal in the 80th minute.

Despite dominating much of the match, South Korea fell behind in the 59th minute when Ladislav Krejčí headed home. However, midfielder Hwang In-beom levelled the score just eight minutes later after being set up by Lee Kang-in.

The Czech Republic thought they had regained the lead through Tomáš Souček, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Moments later, Oh Hyeon-gyu tapped in a cross from Hwang In-beom to complete South Korea’s comeback.

Captain Son Heung-min played a key role throughout the game. Goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu preserved the lead with crucial late saves against Adam Hložek and Michal Sadílek.

The victory marks South Korea’s first winning start to a FIFA World Cup campaign in four tournaments.
