Co-hosts Mexico kicked off the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a convincing victory over South Africa at a packed Azteca Stadium.
Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, taking advantage of two South African red cards in a dramatic contest.
Mexico took the lead after just nine minutes when Julián Quiñones fired home after a midfield turnover. The hosts doubled their advantage in the second half through veteran striker Raúl Jiménez. Whose powerful header was his first-ever World Cup goal.
South Africa’s hopes faded when midfielder Yaya Sithole was sent off early in the second half. A consequence of denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Substitute Themba Zwane later received a second red card, leaving his side with nine men. Mexico also finished with 10 players after César Montes was dismissed late in the match.
The match also saw 17-year-old Gilberto Mora make history as one of the youngest players ever to appear at a FIFA World Cup, second only to Pelé.
Mexico now tops the early standings as the 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway on home soil.
