Beijing has backed Cuba and criticised Washington after the US charged former Cuban leader Raúl Castro with murder.

China has urged the United States to stop using “coercion” and “threats” against Cuba. This comes after former Cuban leader Raúl Castro was charged in a US court over the 1996 downing of two aircraft.
The US indictment accuses Castro and five others of conspiracy to kill US nationals after two planes operated by the Cuban-American group Brothers to the Rescue were shot down between Cuba and Florida, killing four people. The charges carry possible penalties of life imprisonment or death.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Washington should “stop threatening force at every turn” and end the use of sanctions and legal pressure against Cuba. Beijing also reaffirmed its support for Cuba’s sovereignty and opposition to foreign interference.
The diplomatic clash comes as Donald Trump continues to increase pressure on Cuba through sanctions. China has strengthened ties with Cuba in recent years, especially after Havana joined Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative in 2018.
Cuba’s government has dismissed the charges against Castro as politically motivated, while tensions continue to rise.
