Police launch manhunt after Lagos-Benin road attack kills driver

Security forces have begun a major rescue operation after a deadly attack on the Lagos-Benin Expressway.

Police in Edo State have launched an intensive manhunt after gunmen attacked a commercial bus along the Lagos-Benin Road, killing the driver and abducting three passengers.

According to the Edo State Police Command, the incident happened on Saturday around 6:00 p.m. near the Iguobazuwa axis of the highway. The attackers reportedly opened fire on the moving vehicle, killing the driver instantly before forcing some passengers into a nearby forest.

Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem said the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has ordered a coordinated search-and-rescue mission across the Ore-Benin corridor and surrounding forest areas.

Anti-kidnapping operatives, tactical police teams, local hunters, and vigilante groups have been deployed to track the kidnappers, rescue the victims, and arrest those responsible.

A female passenger who suffered gunshot wounds during the ambush was rescued by responding officers. She was taken to hospital and is said to be in stable condition.

Reports indicate the passengers were travelling from Lagos State to eastern Nigeria when the attack occurred. A video circulating online allegedly shows the aftermath of the incident, sparking public outrage and renewed concerns over insecurity on major highways.

The Lagos-Benin Expressway remains one of Nigeria’s busiest transport routes, linking commercial centers in the southwest with several states in the south and east.

Authorities have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to secure the safe release of the kidnapped passengers.

Investigations continue as security teams comb nearby forests for the attackers.
