Mark-led ADC convention illegal, says Nafiu Bala

Nafiu Bala Gombe

Nafiu Bala, former deputy national chairman of the ADC, has described the convention organised by the David Mark-led faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as illegal, insisting that those behind it lack the authority to act on behalf of the party.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Bala said the coalition group responsible for the convention are not recognised members of the party and therefore have no legal standing to convene such a gathering.

Bala, who has approached the court claiming to be the rightful national chairman of the ADC, said any resolutions from the convention are invalid.

“As far as the duly constituted and legitimate leadership of the party is concerned, the coalition group are not members of the ADC,” he said.

“They lack the requisite locus standing to convene any congresses or conventions, and any decisions from such gatherings are devoid of legal effect and cannot pass the test of legality.”

He added that it was contradictory for the group to hold what he described as an unlawful convention while simultaneously seeking judicial validation of similar congresses at the Supreme Court.

Bala said the development further raises questions about the legality of the exercise and the claims being made by the faction.

The ADC, during its convention, expelled Bala, Leke Abejide and other members identified as Elias Adiukeu, Kenneth Ehiator, Kingsley Temitope, Obinna Norman, Kennedy Odiong and Stella Chukwuma.
