Adebayo Adelabu is set to resign as minister of power in the coming days as he prepares to contest the Oyo governorship election in 2027.
Tunji Bolaji, special adviser on strategic communications and media relations to the minister, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
Bolaji said Adelabu has informed President Bola Tinubu of his intention to step down and pursue his political ambition, adding that the president has given his approval.
“In view of this development, Chief Adebayo Adelabu is expected to resign his position as minister of power in the coming days,” the statement said.
He said the timing of the resignation is aimed at ensuring continuity in ongoing reforms in the power sector before Adelabu exits office.
Bolaji noted that the minister has been working to stabilise electricity supply amid challenges such as gas supply constraints, pipeline repairs, and outstanding obligations to gas suppliers.
During his meeting with Tinubu, Adelabu presented his scorecard and outlined key policy frameworks, including the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and its strategic implementation plan.
He also presented a medium-to-long-term integrated resource plan for the power sector to guide sustainability.
Bolaji said Tinubu commended the minister for his efforts and progress in laying a policy foundation for the sector.
“The president also granted his consent and blessing for the minister to pursue his governorship ambition,” the statement added.
Adelabu was appointed minister of power in August 2023 and assumed office after the inauguration of the federal executive council.
