The US president says fresh negotiations with Iran stopped a planned military strike.
Donald Trump said he called off a planned US military attack on Iran after requests from Gulf leaders and renewed hopes for a diplomatic agreement.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said leaders from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates urged him to delay the strike because “serious negotiations” were taking place. He added that the US would still be ready to launch a “full, large scale assault” if talks fail.
Trump also repeated that any deal must ensure there are “no nuclear weapons for Iran.” Iranian officials responded by warning Washington against making further “miscalculations.”
The latest development comes after months of escalating tensions between the US, Israel and Iran following large-scale air strikes that began in February. Although a ceasefire agreed in April has mostly held, clashes and political threats have continued.
The ongoing crisis has also disrupted global oil markets, with Iran maintaining control over the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route.
