Scientists say a world-first vaccine created using artificial intelligence could help protect against future pandemics.
Researchers at University of Cambridge have developed what they describe as the first vaccine whose key component was designed entirely by artificial intelligence and then tested in humans.
The experimental vaccine was created to provide protection against a broad range of coronaviruses. This includes current COVID-19 variants and related viruses that could potentially trigger future pandemics. Scientists say the AI system analysed genetic information from multiple coronaviruses and designed a “super-antigen” capable of training the immune system to recognise and fight an entire family of viruses.
Early-stage human trials involving 39 participants showed the vaccine was safe. Although larger studies are underway to assess its effectiveness. Researchers are also using the same technology to develop vaccines targeting influenza, bird flu and Ebola.
The breakthrough comes as scientists seek faster ways to prepare for emerging diseases. Unlike traditional vaccines, which are often designed to target specific virus strains, the AI-powered approach aims to stay ahead of mutations and future outbreaks.
Researchers believe the technology could transform vaccine development and strengthen global preparedness for future pandemics.
