EFCC raises alarm over impersonation scams, warns about fake officers

The EFCC says criminals are using its identity to extort Nigerians and damage the agency’s image.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised concern over a growing number of impersonation scams involving fraudsters posing as EFCC officers across Nigeria.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the anti-graft agency said intelligence reports show organised groups are using fake uniforms, false accusations, and intimidation tactics to scam unsuspecting citizens in major cities.

According to the EFCC, one common method involves targeting young people around restaurants, lounges, and recreational centres. Victims are allegedly accused of internet fraud without evidence, then robbed of phones, money, and other valuables.

The commission also said another group focuses on motorists. These fake officers reportedly stop vehicles based on number plate identification, threaten drivers with false allegations, and in some cases display weapons to demand money.

The EFCC further condemned staged online videos showing fake raids or “sting operations.” It said such content often includes forced entry into buildings and destruction of property, creating a false image of how the commission operates.

The agency stressed that all genuine EFCC operations follow strict legal procedures and recognised enforcement channels. It urged Nigerians to remain alert, verify suspicious activities, and report incidents through official platforms.

The warning comes amid increasing concerns over fraud and identity-related crimes in Nigeria, where criminals often exploit trusted institutions to deceive the public.

The EFCC says it remains committed to fighting economic and financial crimes and protecting citizens from scammers using its name.
