Dino Melaye, former senator representing Kogi West has asked President Bola Tinubu to explain to Nigerians why Wale Edun was removed from office as minister of finance.
In a post on X on Wednesday, the former Kogi senator said governments in “civilised climes” owe citizens clear reasons when top officials are dismissed.
“Mr President, when ministers are sacked… government must explain why they are sacked,” Melaye wrote.
He questioned whether Edun’s removal was linked to alleged financial irregularities, referencing claims of missing public funds.
“Was the minister of finance removed because he could not cover up the stolen $24 billion…?” he added.
Tinubu had on Tuesday approved a minor cabinet reshuffle, removing Edun as minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy.
The president appointed Taiwo Oyedele as his replacement, directing Edun to hand over immediately.
The reshuffle, announced in a statement by George Akume, secretary to the government of the federation, also saw the exit of Ahmed Musa Dangiwa from the federal executive council.
The presidency said the changes were aimed at strengthening coordination and improving delivery on the government’s economic agenda.
Tinubu also thanked the outgoing ministers for their service.
However, Melaye said the government must go beyond general explanations and provide specific reasons for Edun’s removal.
His comments add to growing public scrutiny over the cabinet reshuffle and the administration’s economic management.
