Germany recovered from an early scare to cruise past World Cup debutants Curacao in Houston.
Germany began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a commanding 7-1 victory over Curacao in their Group E opener on Saturday. Despite conceding a surprise equaliser in the first half, the four-time world champions responded in emphatic fashion to secure all three points.
Felix Nmecha gave Germany an early lead in the sixth minute, but Curacao stunned the favourites when Livano Comenencia scored the nation’s historic first World Cup goal. Germany quickly regained control through goals from Nico Schlotterbeck and Kai Havertz before the break.
The second half was one-sided as Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown, Deniz Undav and Havertz added further goals to complete a dominant performance for Julian Nagelsmann’s side.
Curacao, the smallest nation ever to feature at a FIFA World Cup, briefly threatened an upset after their first-half equaliser. However, Germany’s quality and depth ultimately proved too much for the tournament debutants.
Germany now move to the top of Group E and send an early statement of intent in their pursuit of a fifth World Cup title.
