Liverpool’s season suffers another major setback as Hugo Ekitike faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Liverpool have confirmed that striker Hugo Ekitike will miss the rest of the season after rupturing his Achilles tendon during their 2-0 UEFA Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield. The 23-year-old was forced off in the first half after slipping, and scans later confirmed the severity of the injury.
The club described the injury as “serious,” with early estimates suggesting Ekitike could be out for at least six months, and possibly up to nine. This rules him out not only for the remainder of Liverpool’s campaign but also the upcoming international tournament with France.
Manager Arne Slot admitted the loss adds to a growing injury crisis. Liverpool had planned a revamped attack featuring Ekitike alongside Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, but injuries have limited their time together on the pitch.
The setback continues a difficult season for the club, with several key players, including Alisson Becker and Joe Gomez, also missing games due to injury.
Liverpool’s campaign has been repeatedly disrupted by fitness issues, affecting both performance and squad consistency. Ekitike’s absence now leaves a significant gap in attack at a crucial stage of the season.
With limited options and mounting pressure, Liverpool must now find a way to finish the season strongly without one of their key attacking signings.
