Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to make a rare trip to North Korea for high-level talks with Kim Jong Un.
China has announced that President Xi Jinping will visit North Korea from June 8 to 9. This comes at the invitation of leader Kim Jong Un. It will be Xi’s first visit to Pyongyang since 2019.
The visit comes at a significant moment in regional diplomacy. China remains North Korea’s most important economic and political ally, providing a vital lifeline to the heavily sanctioned country. Discussions are expected to focus on trade, security cooperation and broader regional issues, including North Korea’s nuclear programme. Relations with the United States and South Korea are also expected.
This year marks the 65th anniversary of the defence treaty between China and North Korea, a pact that guarantees mutual support if either nation comes under attack. The meeting also follows Xi’s recent talks in Beijing with US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Xi-Kim summit is expected to reinforce ties between the two neighbours.
